Sueños, the documentary, more than a Cubadisco, an award to Matanzas

A new Cubadisco award honors Matanzas, a particularly significant one with “Sueños. The documentary”, directed by Gabriel Carrera and under the label of the Matanzas production company El Almacén, synthesizes cultural and identity values brought to the screen with a particular sensitivity.

The award in the music documentary category, announced on May 10, did not take the team behind this project by surprise, since since 2018, according to its general director Luis Bran, they have bid among the nominees and winners of this contest. , generally concentrated in the capital.

The material summarizes in little more than 23 minutes the experience of recording the first album of the Rumbatimba group, while weaving together the stories of four of its essential pillars: Diosdado Ramos (Figurín) founder and director of the group; Yuniscleyvis, Jaime and Luis Deyvis Ramos, all members of that prestigious family of rumberos in the city of Yumurina.

According to Anabel Suárez, producer of this material, the filming and post-production process was especially complex since it covered a good part of the period of isolation after the covid-19 pandemic.

“This was a work that came to us in 2019 through Cary Diez, who put us in contact with Bis Music and commissioned us this documentary for Rumba Timba in his 21 years. It is a documentary that becomes difficult when trying to summarize in a limited space of time everything we wanted to say about this group, which stands out for its great tradition of rumberos, but also for its religious traditions, for its sense of identity and for the commitment to that legacy of the young people who make it up.

“On the other hand, the editing and post-production period was somewhat limited, because it is a process that requires teamwork, something that made it more difficult due to the distance and brought with it a bit of a delay in the delivery of the material at this stage. Anabel explained.

In this sense, Luis acknowledges that the context also limited some of the ideas they had conceived.

“For example, we would have loved to film in places that we didn’t have access to at the time; It was also a stage of fear of contagion, there were places where we did not have enough space according to the protocols and that made us very nervous, in addition to other circumstances that each one went through from an individual point of view ”.

“However, we are very satisfied with the final result and with the award. I believe that one of the most important values of Sueños… is, first of all, the inclusion of several of the locations of the site where this project has been developed: the La Marina neighborhood; and secondly, the record of one of the most important moments of the group, which was the recording of that first album, the departure from Matanzas, the intensity of the process in the studio, the fatigue and the dynamics of the group in the midst of this moment”, highlighted Anabel.

For Luis, who also wrote the script with Cary Diez, the award represents more than anything an incentive to continue working for Matanzas.

“At El Almacén we are interested in consecrating the name of Matanzas, above all things, that is one of the pillars of the production company. I am very regionalist and besides loving Matanzas, deeply, I defend it. For this reason, this award is not only a recognition of the producer or Rumba Timba, but an important achievement for the entire province precisely because we are interested in making Matanzas visible and that our work reaches more people.» (ALH)
