The agricultural companies and the productive forms of the cooperative and peasant movement promote the promotion of various crops in the province of Matanzas, with emphasis on rustic ones.

Despite the impact of the blockade, the intensity of the drought and the scarcity of fuel for planting and land preparation, urban agriculture shows results with more than 50,000 tons contracted above the proposals.

Carlos Luis Naranjo Suárez, delegate of Agriculture in Matanzas, called to take advantage of the crop areas to increase the contribution of root vegetables such as plantains, cassava, sweet potatoes and malanga.

Naranjo Suárez highlighted that work is being done to encourage compliance with essential planting plans for the country where food imports appear as one of the two items that generate the most expenses for the national economy.

Contribute to food sovereignty

The province of Matanzas works on the rehabilitation of the banks of the San Juan river, in the capital city for the increase of various crops and the protection of soils.

In this area, the project Generation of capacities for food and nutritional sovereignty in Cuba will be implemented, which consists of four stages and highlights the planting of fruit trees, mainly exotic ones, to create a germplasm bank, the obtaining of vegetable oil and the increase of various crops.

As part of the initiative, actions are conceived for the protection of soils through the use of ecological fertilizers and agroecology.
