So much so that they have proposed reaching 2025 with zero waste and 2030 neutral in carbon emissions, for which they have drawn up their strategy based on the Wave of change movement, which contributes to the better health of seas and oceans with actions that allow you to enjoy the holidays and be respectful with the environment.

It is a practice to which visitors adapt easily, although at first it is strange to them, because this type of tourism that coexists in harmony with nature and the environment is not daily.

The Iberostar Varadero Selection Hotel, belonging to the Spanish hotel chain Iberostar Hotels & Resorts, has 388 rooms and offers an all-inclusive holiday service, with dining options almost 24 hours a day.

A WAVE OF CHANGE

When the deadline for meeting the Sustainable Development Goals approved by the United Nations is almost over, and many countries are still lagging behind in their fulfillment, the Iberostar Varadero Selection is working meticulously to contribute to this strategy that guarantees global sustainability, the reduction of hunger, poverty, inequality and care for the environment.

According to Manuel Vázquez Crespo, from the Wave of Change movement, which contributes to the better health of seas and oceans, they have given priority in the institution to three fundamental lines: eliminating single-use plastics, sustainable fishing and the protection of the dune.

«Since 2019 the hotel has no single-use plastics. We incorporate gel, shampoo and soap dispensers and water is also bottled in glass containers. For this, we built a water bottling room with its sanitary certifications, nylon bags were eliminated and other alternatives derived from paper were sought,» adds Mauryn Ojeda Águila, quality specialist at the hotel.

The second line in which they work is the promotion of sustainable fishing. In that sense they defend that the species to be consumed come with their quality certificate and are fished in the established time and not in closed season. In addition, do not ingest those in danger of extinction.

The third line is the protection of the dune, of great importance if we take into account that many hotels are located in marine environments. Thus, they strengthen ties with the Environmental Services Center of Matanzas and develop actions aimed at collecting waste that appears on the beach and sand and controlling invasive plants.

«In this effort we often involve customers, workers and the community in the repopulation of native plants of the peninsula, with the CITMA project Adopt a tree and save the dune, of which we are part,» explains the quality specialist.

SUSTAINABILITY

Reducing, recycling and reusing as much waste as possible, with an emphasis on the circular economy, is another purpose of this facility.

«We had elements that we did not know how to recycle and from conversations with different institutions such as the Raw Materials Company we have been able to dispose of cooking grease, batteries, porcelain, bottle corks, so that they can be part of other processes,» says Vázquez Crespo.

They also implement energy management systems to optimize air conditioning and lighting through technology, in order to reduce the consumption of hydrocarbons in electricity generation.

«We have installed two solar panels in our network, one for the heating of the spa pool, and we are finishing massive solar panels to heat the water that helps us generate sustainable energy.

«Sustainability is already embedded within the Company’s mission and values. We provide quality tourism services, encompassed within the framework of that premise,» adds Vázquez Crespo.

This sustained work has earned them important recognitions, including the Provincial Quality Award, the National Environment Award and the Ibero-American Quality Award. which shows that tourism can be sustainable and at the same time friendly to the environment.

Tanto es así que se han planteado llegar al 2025 con residuos cero y al 2030 neutros en emisiones de carbono, para lo cual han trazado su estrategia basados en el movimiento Wave of change (Ola de cambio), el cual contribuye a la mejor salud de mares y océanos con acciones que permiten disfrutar de las vacaciones y ser respetuosos con el medioambiente.

Se trata de una práctica a la que los visitantes se adaptan con facilidad, aunque al principio les sea extraño, por no resultar cotidiano este tipo de turismo que coexiste en armonía con la naturaleza y el medio.

El Hotel Iberostar Varadero Selection, perteneciente a la cadena hotelera española Iberostar Hotels & Resorts, cuenta con 388 habitaciones y propone un servicio vacacional todo incluido, con opciones gastronómicas casi las 24 horas del día.

UNA OLA DE CAMBIO

Cuando casi vence el plazo para el cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible aprobados por la Organización de Naciones Unidas, y muchos países se encuentran aún rezagados en su cumplimiento, en el Iberostar Varadero Selection se trabaja minuciosamente para aportar a esta estrategia que garantiza la sostenibilidad mundial, la disminución del hambre, la pobreza, la desigualdad y el cuidado del medioambiente.

Según explica Manuel Vázquez Crespo, a partir del movimiento Ola de cambio, el cual contribuye a la mejor salud de mares y océanos, han dado prioridad en la institución a tres líneas fundamentales: eliminar los plásticos de un solo uso, la pesca sostenible y la protección de la duna.

“Desde el 2019 el hotel no tiene plásticos de un solo uso. Incorporamos dispensadores de gel, champú y jabón y también se embotella el agua en envases de cristal. Para ello construimos un cuarto de embotellamiento de agua con sus certificaciones sanitarias, se eliminaron las bolsas de nylon y se buscaron otras alternativas derivadas del papel”, agrega Mauryn Ojeda Águila, especialista de calidad del hotel.

La segunda línea en la que laboran es el impulso de la pesca sostenible. En ese sentido defienden que las especies a consumir vengan con su certificado de calidad y se pesquen en el tiempo establecido y no en época de veda. Además, que no se ingieran aquellas en peligro de extinción.

La tercera línea es la protección de la duna, de gran importancia si tenemos en cuenta que muchos hoteles están situados en entornos marinos. Así estrechan vínculos con el Centro de Servicios Ambientales de Matanzas y desarrollan acciones destinadas a recoger los residuos que aparecen en la playa y la arena y controlar las plantas invasoras.

“En este empeño muchas veces involucramos a los clientes, los trabajadores y la comunidad en la repoblación de plantas autóctonas de la península, con el proyecto del Citma Adopta un árbol y salva la duna, del cual formamos parte”, explica la especialista de calidad.

SOSTENIBILIDAD

Reducir, reciclar y reusar la mayor cantidad de residuos posibles, con énfasis en la economía circular, es otro de los propósitos de esta instalación.

“Teníamos elementos que no sabíamos cómo reciclar y a partir de conversaciones con diferentes instituciones como la Empresa de Materias Primas hemos podido dar salida a la grasa de cocina, las baterías, la porcelana, los corchos de botella, para que puedan formar parte de otros procesos”, asegura Vázquez Crespo.

También implementan sistemas de gestión de energía para optimizar la climatización y el alumbrado mediante la tecnología, a fin de reducir el consumo de hidrocarburos en la generación de electricidad.

“Tenemos instalados en nuestra red dos paneles solares, uno para la climatización de la piscina del spa, y estamos terminando placas solares masivas para calentar el agua que nos ayuda a la generación de energía sostenible.

“La sostenibilidad está ya insertada dentro de la misión y valores de la Empresa. Brindamos servicios turísticos de calidad, englobados en el marco de esa premisa”, añade Vázquez Crespo.

Esa labor sostenida los ha hecho merecedores de importantes reconocimientos, entre ellos el Premio provincial de Calidad, el Premio Nacional de Medioambiente y el Premio Iberoamericano de la Calidad, lo que demuestra que el turismo puede ser sostenible y a la misma vez amigable con el entorno.
