“I was born without nails, in their place some fragile tissues came out. Because of this peculiarity, one of my teachers called me to take the exam in three for the level pass at the Conservatory. I did it like that. I traveled to Havana to study in the recently created chair of tres and lute at the National School of Art.

“The School was the place to which every young musician aspired. It was an adventure. I discovered jazz, received classes from extraordinary beings such as Efraín Amador, and shared a room with greats of Cuban culture such as Alain Pérez, Alexander Abreu and David Blanco.

“At that time timba was popular. For the students it was a luxury to belong to the groups of Paulito FG, el Médico de la Salsa or NG la Banda, but I met Frank Delgado and that more urban trova. From Granma I came with a certain culture about what the song was, but the Havana trova invited me to rediscover that poetry. He asked his friends to listen to a verse by Liuba María Hevia and Frank himself, while he played the tres with the Septeto Habana. I decided to experiment with trova, which is what keeps me alive to this day.

“Upon graduating, I formed the duo Lien y Rey with Lien Rodríguez. Like all young people, in the social service we went out to eat the world, we recorded some records and we did several concerts. He wrote instrumentals for cello and tres, and people found that unusual sound attractive. Then, Lien is awakened by that need to make songs ”.

—What elements distinguish the songs of Lien and Rey?

—Some people say that trova is a way of life, it’s an attitude. I consider that it is also a form of artistic and convincing resistance. When I listen to our first songs, I am surprised by the madness with which we assume to defend this musical genre. We did not consider accompaniment as a complement or prop, but rather as important as our speech, he maintained. It is precisely what distinguishes us.

—After more than two decades together, the duo separates, what was it like to go on stage alone?

—Getting over any break is difficult, although I thought the duo would continue despite the divorce. I decided to undertake and I dusted off some of my songs that had never been edited. The main concern came because I always served as a second voice. I was scared by the reaction of the spectators.

—How much of Rey is there on your records?

I do not leave something that does not identify me. The first solo album is called Naturaleza, which shows Rey as she is. It was recorded in the White Room without any artifice or clothing. It is my cover letter.

“The next record production is about my vision of Cuban music. In my songs several Cuban elements appear that may not be so explicit, but they are there. Those who listen to it will find guaracha, son, guajira, bolero and of course, song”.

—Who are you when you’re away from the stage?

—Laughter characterizes me, it is a constant. With my family and my friends I am fun. It bothers me how badly done and having to deal with people who don’t understand the artist or who take us for fools. I am an ordinary Cuban. I always explain to my daughter that you have to return to the mud at some point. You can be on top, you can make a record and even win a Grammy, but it’s nice to go back to where it all started. Rising and falling is educational, because you respawn stronger. That is precisely what life is about, that is why I enjoy being close to people.

—If you had to blame life for something, what would it be?

—We are in the world to learn and everything happens for a reason. Everything we do transcends, and we must be consistent with it. What can we reproach if we are the only ones responsible? (ALH)

“Nací sin uñas, en su lugar salieron unas telitas frágiles. Por esta peculiaridad uno de mis profesores me convocó a realizar, para el pase de nivel en el Conservatorio, el examen en tres. Así lo hice. Viajé hasta La Habana para estudiar en la recién creada cátedra de tres y laúd de la Escuela Nacional de Arte.

“La Escuela era el lugar al que todo joven músico aspiraba. Fue una aventura. Descubrí el jazz, recibí clases de seres extraordinarios como Efraín Amador, y compartí salón con grandes de la cultura cubana como Alain Pérez, Alexander Abreu y David Blanco. 

“Por aquellas fechas era popular la timba. Para los estudiantes era un lujo pertenecer a las agrupaciones de Paulito FG, el Médico de la Salsa o NG la Banda, pero conocí a Frank Delgado y esa trova más urbana. Desde Granma venía con cierta cultura sobre lo que era la canción, pero la trova habanera me invitaba a redescubrir esa poesía. Les pedía a los amigos que escucharan un verso de Liuba María Hevia y del propio Frank, al tiempo que tocaba el tres con el Septeto Habana. Decidí experimentar con la trova que es lo que me mantiene vivo hasta hoy.

“Al graduarme, conformé junto a Lien Rodríguez el dúo Lien y Rey. Como todo joven, en el servicio social salimos a comernos el mundo, grabamos algunos discos e hicimos varios conciertos. Escribía instrumentales para violonchelo y tres, y a las personas les pareció atractiva aquella sonoridad poco común. Luego, a Lien se le despierta esa necesidad de hacer canciones”. 

—¿Qué elementos distinguen las canciones de Lien y Rey? 

—Algunas personas manifiestan que la trova es un modo de vida, es una actitud. Considero que es además una forma de resistencia artística y convincente. Cuando escucho nuestras primeras canciones, me sorprende la locura con que asumimos defender este género musical. El acompañamiento no lo considerábamos como complemento o puntal, sino que era tan importante como nuestro discurso, lo sostenía. Es precisamente lo que nos distingue.

—Luego de más de dos décadas juntos, el dúo se separa, ¿cómo fue subir solo al escenario?

—Superar cualquier ruptura es difícil, aunque creí que el dúo seguiría a pesar del divorcio. Decidí emprender y desempolvé algunas canciones mías que nunca se habían montado. La principal preocupación llegaba porque siempre me desempeñé como segunda voz. Me asustaba la reacción de los espectadores. 

“El primer concierto fue en el Patio Colonial. Músicos, amigos y personas del público me felicitaron por la magia que se vivió allí y decidí continuar con este proyecto”.

—¿Qué tanto hay de Rey en sus discos?

—No dejo plasmado algo que no me identifique. El primer disco en solitario se llama Naturaleza, que muestra a Rey tal y como es. Se grabó en la Sala White sin ningún artificio ni vestidura. Es mi carta de presentación. 

“La próxima producción discográfica versa sobre mi visión de la música cubana. En mis canciones aparecen varios elementos de cubanía que quizá no sean tan explícitos, pero allí están. Quienes lo escuchen encontrarán guaracha, son, guajira, bolero y por supuesto, canción”.

—¿Quién eres cuando estás lejos de los escenarios?

—Me caracteriza la risa, es una constante. Con mi familia y mis amigos soy divertido. Me molesta lo mal hecho y tener que lidiar con personas que no entienden al artista o que nos toman por tontos. Soy un cubano de a pie. A mi hija siempre le explico que hay que regresar en algún momento al lodo. Puedes estar en la cima, puedes grabar un disco e incluso ganar un Grammy, pero es bueno volver a donde comenzó todo. Subir y caer es educativo, porque reapareces con más fuerza. De eso precisamente trata la vida, por ello disfruto la cercanía con la gente. 

“Me encanta saludar a todos, soy extremadamente despistado y de mirar directamente a los ojos”.

—Si tuvieras que reprocharle algo a la vida, ¿qué sería?

—Estamos en el mundo para aprender y todo ocurre por algún motivo. Cuanto hacemos trasciende, y debemos ser consecuentes con ello. ¿Qué podemos reprochar si somos los únicos responsables? (ALH)
